Duke of Clarence, 21 Horseferry Road, St John, Westminster

Until the early 1860s, the eastern end of Horseferry Road, from Marsham Street to Lambeth Bridge, was called Market Street, and the entries from The Era up to the end of 1864 give the address of this pub as Market Street, so presumably it was in that eastern section. At 14 Horseferry Road in the 1861 census.
In 1852 a dispute broke out between the then licensee, George Tennant, and Thorne’s brewery who owned part of the premises. Thorne’s opposed the renewal of Tennant’s license at the general licensing meeting, but later withdrew their opposition and the license was renewed on 24th March. In April, Thorne’s succeeded in ejecting Tennant from the part of the house they owned, but as he continued business in the other part, they applied for a separate license on May 25th for their half. The case makes fascinating reading, - although they were refused, the final outcome is unclear, since we find that in 1856 a James John Young was licensee, and he transferred the license to - George Tennant! *

W Summerland is at the Westminster Arms, 14 Market Street by 1843 (dates from directories). The licensee there in 1851 is George Tennant, who is mentioned above, and no Duke of Clarence is listed. I wonder if these are the same place!
