This pub still existed until recently. It was one of a remarkable trio of pubs within a hundred yards of each other which survived from the mid-nineteenth century with the same names, and on the same sites. It was closed in 2004 and demolished soon afterwards. Happily, the other two members of the trio - the Barley Mow (104 Horseferry Road) and the White Horse and Bower (86 Horseferry Road) – are still with us (August 2011). *

In his application for a new license in 1852, Edward Harding stated that the
premises had been “fifteen years a beer-house.” Mr Harding is recorded as a
publican living at 23 Medway Street in the 1851 Census, but no name is given
to the premises. In the 1841 Census, house numbers are not given, but the
22nd property listed is a Beer Shop with Mary Bird as the sole occupant. By
1861 the property is still listed as a beer-shop and the head of household a
beer-shop keeper, and occupies Nos 22 and 23, as it does in 1871. *
