This pub stood about half-way along the southern side of Gardener’s Lane. The address was 24 Gardener’s Lane up to 1851. Many references add “King Street” to the address, presumably to distinguish it from the other Gardener’s Lane, off York Street. It was used as a recruiting base by the Royal Marines throughout the second half of the 19th Century. It closed around 1899 when Gardener’s Lane was demolished to make way for government offices. ***

25th Jul 1841/ Mrs Mary Crask, wife of John Crask, proprietor of the Swan
and Horseshoe, King Street, gave evidence at the inquest on her sister, Mrs
Rebecca Birley, wife of Samuel Birley, a licensed victualler in Litcham,
Norfolk. (Reported in The Era) ***
[I cannot find the Crasks (nor indeed any other licensed victualler in
Gardener’s Lane, although there is one beershop keeper) in the 1841 census,
which was held a mere 7 weeks before this inquest, though I can find the
Birleys at the Bull Inn, High Street, Litcham. Note, however, that Mary
Crask, a widow from Norfolk, lived at the pub with her brother-in-law, Jesse
Chew, at the 1851 Census.]
