Windsor Castle, 23 Francis Street, London SW1P 1DN

Westminster St Margaret index

The earliest reference I have found to this pub is on 13th May 1823, when an inquest held there is reported in The Morning Post. It appears to have been rebuilt in 1848, and again in 1896. It was at 23 Francis Street by 1891. The name was changed to the Cardinal in 1963, in honour of Cardinal Manning, founder of the nearby Westminster Cathedral. It reverted to the Windsor Castle, despite much opposition from the Roman Catholic hierarchy, after refurbishment in early 2011.***

[Jacob King, who would appear, from the directories, to have been licensee from 1899 to 1915 at least, was living with his wife Esther and 6 children at 3 Woodchurch Road Hampstead at the 1901 Census. He is recorded as a Licensed Victualler, but there is no other indication that the address in Hampstead was a pub – there is no barmaid, potman, etc. In 1911, he is not at home, but his wife Esther is still at the same address: again no indication that it is a pub. He seems to have been an absentee landlord.]
