May 1856/Thomas Pepper, a hawker of fish, was charged with stealing 12s 6d, the
money of Joseph Rawlings, of Union Street, Borough, who deposed that at
about eleven o'clock on that morning he was at the Crown and Cushion, High
street, and paid for some beer, of which the prisoner partook. He then went
into the tap room and fell asleep, and when he awoke he missed the money
from his pocket. No other person besides witness and the prisoner was in the
tap room.
Mrs Parsons, landlady of the Crown and Cushion, deposed she saw several half
crowns in the hand of the prosecutor when he paid for the beer.
The potman of the Crown and Cushion was examined, but merely proved that the
parties were drinking together, and as no other evidence was produced, the
