Chiswick pub history index

Prior to 1812, this pub was called the Lower Packhorse. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1910. ** You can see the building changes in the photographs of 1910 and that which is slightly earlier. According to sources, it has been a Fullers public house since 1808, which is still the case in 2018, and therefore for over 200 years. It is also alleged to have been in operation since 1747.

In 1870 in the parish of St Pancras, Frederick Thompson, a publican aged 20, son of Frederick Thompson, a deceased publican, marries Cecilia Annie Chandler Cade, also aged 20, daughter of William Cade, a tailor. Some time after, they take on the license of the Old Pack Horse. A separate marriage banns mentions that both his parents are deceased, which is relevant as both are under the age of consent of 21 to marry. His father Frederick Fitzjames Thompson was the inn keeper of the Archway Tavern between 1866 and about 1870; and also in the 1861 census. The census of 1871 and 1881 show Frederick Thompson, the junior, being a very responsible young man who supports his younger siblings.

They begin married life as the managers of the Mitre Inn, Richmond, Surrey according to the 1871 census.
