John Patton used to be the publican of the Old Hat. He took over in 1853 (Morning Advertiser 27 Sep 1853), which notes the transfer of licence. On the census of 1861 he was at the Horse and Groom in St. Martin in the Fields. Prior to having the Old Hat, he appears to have been the publican at the Star Public House in Blackman Street, in the Borough (Southwark?) from 1850. *
