One of my aunts was descended from George Jethro Swettenham, who was publican here from c1891-1894. *
It was wonderful to see the picture of the old pub, though I was saddened to read that its 1923 replacement survives only as a Tesco Express - though that's better than being demolished, I suppose.
I was surprised that the old pub was replaced as early as 1923, as it appears to have only dated from the 1850s.
Such buildings usually survived much longer than 70 odd years.
I wondered if there was a fire, or other explanation for its assumed demolition and replacement.
