A walk along the canal that borders the District Line from Upminster to Hammersmith, via West Ham and Mile End etc. It is the green line on the London Tube map.
I am not a clever photographer, but I love this picture - the old and the new, water and electricity and gas. Technology from a grassy bank.
West Ham Gas Works in June 2006, with the District Line & Creek in the foreground and Canary Wharf Tower in the background [just visible].
Another picture of the West Ham Gas works without the train, or canary wharf
What I am now attempting to achieve is the coverage of an earlier London
street directory in 1832. This is unique, plus
images of the 1842 Robsons directory which confirm earlier entries and also
carry much more trade detail about a premises or person. Here is the index of streets in 1832, many with
1842 imagery added.
And next is the complete 1940 London street directory - this will take some months to complete, so bear with me!
