In the will of John Archdale dated 13th February 1713/4 he left "all that my messuage and Tenement with the Appurtenances called The Roobuck [Roebuck] in the City of Oxford" to his wife Anne - this was actually just for her lifetime, in other words she could enjoy the rents / proceeds from the property until she died. His instruction then was that it was to pass to his grandson, Thomas Archdale Rooke.
Anne Archdale (widow of John Archdale) died in 1719. She left a will which was proved on the 1st November 1719. In this she left mainly personal bequests and the instruction that "I Will and desire that all the Legacyes given away by my late Husband's Will shall be paid according to such his Will". Although she did not itemise the various properties left to grandchildren, we assume The Roobuck fell into this category. Certainly she could not have sold it herself.
As stated, according to the will of his grandfather, John Archdale, the Roobuck then passed to Thomas Archdale Rooke. Thomas died in Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire, around 1770. His will mentioned various properties in London that were bequeathed to him by his grandfather, which were obviously still in his possession, but there was no mention of The Roobuck and from that I think we must assume that he sold it somewhere between 1719 and 1770.
John Archdale lived in High Wycombe. He was a Quaker in his later life and he was Governor of North Carolina for a couple of years from 1695. He returned home soon afterwards and spent the rest of his time in England. He was elected to Parliament in 1698 but did not take his seat as, being a Quaker, he felt unable to take the necessary oath. More information can be found about John Archdale. ***

He is also my 8 x great grandfather. We have assumed that 'The Roobuck' must be the Roebuck.
