Souldern 1863 Dutton, Allen & Co Directory listing

SOULDERN is an extensive parish and very pleasant village, situate on the river Cherwell, 3 1/2 miles from Deddington, and 7 N.W. from Bicester, in the hundred of Ploughley and union of Bicester. The church is a small, and, with the exception of the chancel, very old stone structure, in various orders of architecture, dedicated to St. Mary; the edifice includes north and south aisles, with nave possessing a clerestory, and parted from the south aisle by three pointed arches resting on round columns; the windows are beautiful specimens of early decoration. The living is a rectory, value £570, in the deanery of Bicester, and presentation of St. John's College, Cambridge; the Rev. Lawrence Stephenson, D.D., is the present rector. It is stated that "Wordsworth, the poet, composed some of his poems here while visiting his college friend, the Rev. Robert Jones, then incumbent of this Tillage. A national school was established in 1816, and endowed by Mrs. Elizabeth Westcar with £544 10s. 8d. new three-and-a-half per cents.; with the proceeds derived from this charity and the pence contributed by the children, about 50 boys are educated. The amount of acreage is 2270; the land is very fertile though varied, chiefly consisting of clay and loam near the river Cherwell, and soil and stone brash on the high ground. In 1861 the population was 587.
