SHIMPLING (otherwise SHIMPLINGTHORNE) is a village and parish, in Babergh hundred, Sudbury union, county court district, rural deanery, and archdeaconry, diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 7 ½ miles north from Sudbury station, 7 ½ south from Bury St. Edmund's, and 4 ½ west-north-west from Lavenham. The church of St. George is a plain structure, with side aisle, tower, and 5 hells: a memorial window was erected in 1864, by Miss Hallifax, as a memento to her late sister. The register dates from 1538. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £600 in 1837, in the patronage of, and held by, the Rev. Augustus Charles Hope Bolton, M.A. Chadacre Hall, the seat of Miss Hallifax (lady of the manor), is a modern mansion, situated in a park within half a mile of the village. The Thorne is a good mansion, half a mile from the village. The population in 1861 was 600, and the area is 2,698 acres. Parish Clerk, Henry Bailey
